D S Kulkarni Interview
DSK- the man is the institution. Here in a candid tête-à-tête with Neha Panicker the real estate czar speaks about his rise to the top and shares his love for the city of Pune.
“I’m a true blue Punekar” is how the dynamic D.S. Kulkarni, Chairman and Managing Director of DSK Group, describes himself. “This beautiful city is where I grew up. The lush green trees, the cool climate, the pristine Mula Mutha where we splashed around during those unforgettable Ganesh Visarjans are childhood memories etched in my mind forever.” he reminisces. “Pune has come a long way. From the city of quiet serenity of cycle wheels to the bustling mini metro of speed tyres, the transformation is incredible. But it’s the warmth of the people that has remained unchanged.”
DSK Group enjoys a commanding presence in the housing sector in Pune and Mumbai. This famous builder who earned his first rupee at the age of eight by selling raw mangoes on a cycle cart to owner of the 500 crore DSK Group that he is today, Mr. Kulkarni never had it all served on a golden platter. From visiting house to house on his cycle cleaning telephones, slowly graduating to painting contracts, waterproofing, wiring, plumbing, furniture, eventually to the entire business of building itself; he’s done it all! The DSK Group started its business in 1970, venturing in the field of construction since 1981 and various other business fields like Engineering, Chemicals, Hotels, Trading House and Import and Export since 1996. DSK Charitable Trust, DSK Toyota, DSK School are few of his many ventures.
“Pune today is the typical new generation city. The cosmopolitan culture has become the face of the city. Alongwith the measurable student population owing to the number of prestigious schools and colleges here, the city is also booming with youngsters in the IT sector. With regard to buildings, the constructions are improving everyday to match the character of the city. The consumer here is conscious and well aware of what he wants. The combination of an educational, IT and industrial hub makes Pune one of the most sought after cities. Pune is blessed with plenty of water and the city will never face any shortages. Needless to say, everyone knows this is a great place to stay!” says the man with the baritone voice.
D.S. Kulkarni is an active participant of the cultural and social events of the city. Theater especially is one of his interests. He is also making efforts towards the environmental issues of the city. One of the first effluent treatment plants was his initiative and he has successfully practiced rainwater harvesting in all his projects for many years now. He is all praise for renowned Architect B.V. Doshi and it concerns him that people in the country are unaware of such great men like Architect Doshi. “Men like him are the real wealth of our country,” he states.
He believes in working hard and pushing oneself to the best of one’s abilities. His message for the young guns of today is to come together as one and work for the betterment of our society. After all, nothing is impossible to accomplish D.S. Kulkarni has proved that for sure.
