Stories anyone?
One day Sage Gritsamad sneezed and from his nose emerged a young boy. The sage took fancy to the young lad and brought him as his own. The sage taught the child the Ganesh mantra on which the boy meditated intensely. Pleased by his devotion Ganesha granted him three weapons made of gold, silver and iron respectively. Since he was now the owner of three weapons he came to be known as Tripur. Ganesh had also blessed him as one who would be all powerful and one who could only be defeated by Shiva himself. Tripur's boon soon went to his head and he became arrogant, eyeing the thrones of Bramha and Vishnu, he soon defeated them and took over their possessions. He went on to take over the Kailash Parvat, the abode of Lord Shiva too. He thus became the lord of all the three worlds and his atrocities know no bounds.
Lord Narad advised the defeated Gods to dwell on Lord Ganesha for a solution, for it was him who had bestowed the powers on Tripur. Ganesha coming to the rescue of the gods disguised himself as a Brahmin and promised Tripur the power to fly if he would get the him the Chintamani Stone from Kailash Mountain. Tripur went to Kailash to retrieve the stone and thus enraged Shiva and soon a battle ensued between the two. Shiva was faltering in the fierce battle when he realized that he had not asked the Vighnaharta for his blessings before going into battle. The entire scenario changed in Shiva's favour as soon as he had invoked the blessings of Ganesha and he proceeded to kill Tripur and put an end to his atrocities. The place where Shiva asked Ganesha for his blessings was Manipur, which in today's day is known as Ranjangoan.
