Makeup mantras
Looking great isn’t easy when it’s hot and sultry. Let the makeover maestros tell you how to look your dewy-fresh best

Want to sparkle through the heat and dust of summer? Just follow these make-up mantras.
Don’t overdo, advises makeup artist Bharat Godambe. Steer clear of pancake that tends to make your face look pasty, and powder that settles into the fine folds of your skin as the minutes tick by. "As a rule, you should apply your sunscreen below the foundation, whether or not you step outdoors,” says Godambe. “Dab an oil-free moisturiser throughout the day, and minimise the use of foundation. Use a concealer only to address problem areas like dark circles and freckles," he says. His choice of concealers are Chanel's Vita Lumier and ProLumier.
The overall look this summer is relatively matte with hints of shine on the cheekbones, lips and eyes. Accentuate your eyes and lips. "I would recommend an easy fresh look in the morning and afternoon, with a hint of colour in the eyes," says makeup maestro Clint Fernandes. "Use a waterproof mascara to bring out your lashes. L’Oreal's Double Volume Mascara is manna for the eyes. Dab Lakme's Ritu Beri for daywear blush and lip gloss in strawberry pinks and flesh tones -- Chanel's City Range offers super shades and quality -- and you are on a roll," he says.
Evening is the time for some drama; play up the winsome features of your face. Light blue is hot this season. "During the day, stick to natural tones and pastel hues and sparkle at night with a bit of frosted chocolate or a hint of colour with kohl. Lakme's blue eyeshadow looks magical in the late hours. You can highlight your eyes by using a black eyeliner in swift smooth strokes -- just like it was worn in the 60s. My pick would be black and green liner in Bourjouis," says Clint. Revlon's Gold Lights work as an awesome dust-on at night. Purple lip gloss is best if you want to be a bit on the bolder side.
If you want the classic look, the old rose palette in Shieshiedo and Clarin's will light up your lips. "But you must keep in mind the colour of your teeth while choosing ruddy hues," warns makeup artist Marvie Beck. "If your pearlies aren't really that, avoid bright reds. Likewise, if you have scanty eyebrows, opt for pebble grey or charcoal pencil sticks to line your eyes instead of the jet-black eyeliner, which just ends up looking too stark," he adds.
Make use of two simple tricks. Switch on the air-conditioner before applying makeup. It helps 'fix' the colours and allows the makeup to stay on longer. Then mix a blob of moisturiser with the foundation. If you are using only a concealer, moisturise your skin before applying. Alternatively, you can spray on a mild mist of water and then dab with a tissue or compact sponge. It helps 'set' the makeup.
Hints from Clint
1. Alternate dark/ heavy eyes with a darker mouth. Avoid wearing deep colours on the eyes and lips at the same time
2. Use a light liquid foundation. It wears better in our tropical climes and is not messy
3. Lip gloss is good for a sassy swing this season. Must use.
4. Bring out the bronzer or bronzing powder at night. Get a feel of the sun without the fuss.
5. Apply sunscreen before you start applying makeup
