Mum’s the word

Shopping for your children can be a daunting task. Here’s what some celeb mothers picked up in kids wear this summer.

Mini Mathur (Television anchor)

My son is only three and I buy only what he decides to wear. My unusual pick this summer has been a pair of funky swimming trunks in turquoise blue with pictures of fish on it. I invest more in his shoes and jeans as they last longer than the T-shirts. But I often pick up the Rs 50 T-shirts as he inevitably comes back after playing with green or black paint on his T. I save from stains the expensive shirts and really good quality stuff from GAP or Zara that he wears to birthday parties. He's very fond of wearing full-sleeved shirts even in this heat. The daddy hangover, you know.

Pooja Bedi (Television host and actor)

I buy for my kids whatever they want, mostly branded stuff. Apart from casual clothes, what grab my eye are unusual accessories. Like recently when my kids and I were in Australia, we strolled into a National Geographic shop and I picked up T-shirts, caps, and crazy outdoor stuff like boomerangs, baby volcanoes prepped up with vinegar -- they make great playthings and whet their curiosity.

Shaina NC (Fashion Designer)

Fortunately, I buy for my kids whatever I want without them dictating any choices. I don't believe in overindulging them. For Shanaya, I’ve just picked up crinkled cotton skirts with a slight flare, peppered with delicate threadwork and winking mirrors. They’re great comfort wear for the Indian summer. I'm not brand-conscious and shop anywhere -- from abroad to even Fashion Street in Mumbai. What matters is that clothes should have a good finish, comfortable and offer value for money.

Waluscha Robinson (Model)

I have just shopped a lot for my daughters in both Singapore and Dubai -- plenty of summer dresses replete with straps, bows and flounce. I guess my kids aren't old enough to dictate their choices! What I've got for them are halter tops and A-line frocks that go below the knees, in mainly pinks and whites. Tiny pedal pushers and adorable shorts are my hottest pick of the season for my kids this summer.

Bandana Tewari (Writer)

I pick up inexpensive comfort clothing for my three-year-old. I've stocked her summer wardrobe with a lot of cotton garments splashed with bandhni and batik work. I call these `jhalli’ clothes, but believe me, they look so cute on kids -- bright pinks, dusky, wind-blown hues evocative of Rajasthan. They’re perfect for the heat: they have that curious flea market touch, are soft on Myrah's skin and make her look like a little gypsy!
